Quaking light spills through the leaves of my neighbor's aspen tree, gently casting its mark on a topographic map of Macon County, NC.

Bloomberg Canvassers for the Los Angeles Times

I was recently assigned to walk the Denver burbs for the Los Angeles Times and speak with primary voters and document canvassers. For the first time in 20 years, Colorado is holding a presidential primary instead of caucuses.

Carhenge: Eclipse 2017

More than 4000 years since the Chinese observed the eclipse of 2136 BC, millions of Americans are flocking to cities and towns along “the path of totality” to witness this celebrated celestial event.

Visitors read the raised bronze letters of the Columbine Memorial plaques in whispers, asking questions to God, survivors, the community, and each other.

The historic Denver neighborhood of Whittier is northeast of the rapidly growing downtown. By standards of cities in the American West, it’s old.

Notes on the Chickahominy River

The American Civil War will forever fascinate me, not just the battlefield glory but the politics that ground this American experiment in democracy to a halt 150 years ago.

Miller House

Look past reminders of modern-day, and it’s easy to imagine this view of the Miller House under construction in the winter of 1901. The snow and ice-packed streets of the Whittier neighborhood take on the look of how roads in the first few days of the 20th century looked, rutty and muddy.
